 Ceramic Spirit Mask of the Woods
On a whim one day, I decided to play with the creation of masks. It became a magical process! It was as if a long-lost spirit had found an avenue for expression through my hands and the clay. I "tuned in" and knew what needed to be added next. My masks evoke an expression of ancient times, lost cultures and nature spirits. I feel each mask is meant to find its rightful owner. You will know when you see it!
Spirit Masks are made of high-fire stoneware clay. After rolling out the clay I often make impressions with leaves and create textures. After a bisque firing, the masks are stained with oxides to enhance the designs. A final firing is done to 2300 degrees resulting in a piece that should last a very long time....perhaps to be uncovered by future generations in an archaeological dig! The masks are sometimes adorned with feathers, stones, beads, shells....whatever I feel is needed. Each is ready for hanging using suede "rope".
